Iceland's History on Dipity.
I added these events to the timeline for assignment 9. This information, as well as the sources, are provided in the timeline.
Approx. 1000 AD - Icelanders are converted to Christianity because the king of Norway had recently converted and wanted to do the same to the countries he controlled. This was significant in the fact that it was probably one of the most peaceful Christian conversions in history. It also put pagan beliefs on the backburner, although the practices could be done in private.
1402 - The Black Plague hits Iceland and wipes out over a third of the population. This is significant in the ability of Iceland to bounce back from such a devastating disease.
1707 - This time, the Bubonic Plague hits Iceland and again wipes out about a third of the population. Despite this, Iceland recovered yet again.
1915 - Icelandic women receive suffrage. Iceland was one of the first countries to grant women full voting rights, giving way to their progressive and feminist views.
1949 - The North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) is formed amongst North America and European countries to protect those nations against attack from the USSR. Iceland, although quite small, was able to be part of a significant collection of allies.
1980 - Iceland elects first nationally elected female president in the world, Vigdís Finnbogadóttir, further exemplifying Iceland’s feminist viewpoints.
